Harvey:
I suspece the 87 300D and the 87 190 D turbo would be just about the same -- the 300D has a 603 engine (six cylinder) and the 190D has the 602 (5 cylinder). That extra 0.5L of engine probably almost makes up for the extra weight.
Either way, these are road rockets for diesels -- I have lots of fun on the highway when someone does the "its a diesel, better change lanes" thing -- they never seem to get around me, somehow!

The vacuum cutoff if the vacuum powered fuel shutoff on the injection pump. It mechanically forces the rack in the IP to reduce the amount of fuel injected to zero, stopping the engine.
