It is not the overall parenting skills that get children killed it is that one second lapse of judgement that does it. The parents can hide a gun so that god couldn't find it but two 8 year olds can find it in a second.

My youngest son at about age 8 played with the child of a good hearted, hard working man that I knew for years and liked very much. One afternoon my son came home and mentioned that he and his friend had found a gun in the attic. I asked my friend if he owned a gun and he said yes he owned an old army .45 but that it was hidden safely in the attic. I told him that it wasn't hidden any more. I never let my son go to his house again. His friend was welcome at our house but the other way around. The thought of one of them shooting the other plagued me for years. All it would have taken is one split second and the lives of two families would have changed forever.
