Four rules:

1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
2. Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.
3. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to shoot.
4. Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to shoot.

Follow all four and you will never have an accidental shooting. These rules are so simple a child can learn them. For those too young to learn these rules we have Eddie Eagle's instructions to youngsters encountering unattended weapons:

1. Stop.
2. Don't touch.
3. Leave the area.
4. Tell an adult.

Firearms, like many things can be dangerous, but lack of proper training is what really makes them dangerous.
