That is the thing though. Because mortal judgment isn't perfect, the afterlife is there to promise a 2nd punishment, just in case this one fails. As the victim, you can be soothed that there will be judgment no matter what and even if the perp gets punished, there will be another one waiting for him.
OTOH, a disbeliever does not know what is out there. So he can imagine everything or nothing. As a rough guide, go blindfold yourself and do your daily routine. See if you are feeling good or not.
