Had an XJR and replaced the tensioners as a preventative measure.
My friend Bob bought an XJ8 with the same issue and was able to bring it back to life without pulling the head. The timing chain broke but it did not bend the valve. Are we sure cylinder 1 was reading zero or was it just low. These nikisil sleeved engines can have low compression numbers cold.
Bob buys fixers like this all the time and pays decent money for them. I'm guessing it would be worth about 10k running and driving perfectly. 2-4k is what I guess it would bring salvage. Amateurs on the higher end, pros on the low end.
copart will give her a bid over the phone, and that would be the starting point. Though I'm reasonably certain Bob would give more.
If this didn't happen to her the transmission would probably have gone soon as well. The XJ8s got a very weak tranny. XJRs got the 722 Mercedes tranny. By 2003 the tensioner issue was resolved.
