I believe I've had a question like this before. I don't believe any cutting is neccesary, i may be wrong. It may also depend on what year it is. On the earlier ones there was still the LCD screen which would show "On" or "OFF" depending on if the anti tow sensor was turned off or not. On these I believe the trip computer will drop in to the same position. Starting in 2000 i think you may be correct, although good luck trying to just cut out a window for the LCD screen and having it look decent.
On the more important question on if it will work, it's rare to have to remove the non-trip computer version, so I can't swear that the wiring is there or not.
