crank sensor bracket to transmission gap (plus teaser)

Hi All,

This is regarding a 1988 560 engine.
Short story: I am attaching a picture of the gap between the engine block, the crank position sensor and the transmission case. Is this normal, or was there some kind of (plastic?) cover between the tranny and the bracket?

Long story: I have done a megasquirt conversion on my 380SL. The engine was leaking oil and it turned out to be a leak at the rear main bearing. Thus I removed the engine and transmission. I found a repairable 560 engine, stripped it and rebuilt it. I have moved my megasquirt set-up over to this engine and added an EDIS wheel (and thus a distributorless set-up). Once it is completely done and before I put the engine back, I will post some pictures for eternity Until then I am attaching an "ugly" teaser. Please no remarks on this setup in this thread, as I need to know about that gap.
