My gut feeling however is that the hinge mechanism is damaged at best. You might find that the hinge mounting points on the chassis are rusted / damaged / buggered. I hope not!

There is a slight amount of wiggle movement in the hinge / bonnet attachment that might give you enough "lift" but there isn't much there.

Don't forget the golden rule - if in doubt post some pictures!
