If you are talking about his military service you are way off calling it a free meal ticket. He went to Viet Nam If I am not mistaken. There were no free meal tickets there and no place you were completely safe.
A friend of mine was in the Navy and that did not sound too bad a duty. They parked just over the horizon and lobbed shells at the north.
