That is exactly right in a GASOLINE engine. In a diesel, injecting too much fuel will produce SLIGHTLY more cylinder pressure, but excessive waste energy (heat.)

As I've said before, there are things about the difference between the diesel and gas combustion that I don't understand WHY they happen, but I know they happen.
