I wrote the preceeding post without seeing leathermang's post first, we basically wrote them simultaneously. I saw the post immediately after submitting mine.
Although he was coming from a totally different angle than myself, and very obviously more articulate, I thought it interesting that we were both supporting much the same view.
BTW, I am a low time, pilot myself, although I am not current, and also understand denisty altitude. I also understand that there are power AND aerodynamic effects of same. There also is control of the mixture in some airplanes to partially compensate.
