I have often thought of modifying odds and ends like this. However, I always seem to come to the same conclusion:

These are well-engineered cars manufactured in a certain way for a reason. The risk of altering a design that could negatively affect the car in some unforeseen way, trumps the possibility of modest performance enhancement.
