I'd agree. The law of unintended consequences comes in to play all too easily in these types of situations. For instance, without a check on water drainage capabilities your new (proposed) scoop might funnel in more water in a rainstorm than the existing drain can handle. That could be a REAL problem. If you choose to try this I'd be very careful.
