Sometimes. To me they're more unpredictable than deer, sometimes running INTO the road from the shoulder where they're grazing. I hit one in an 85 3/4 ton Suburban years ago. The vehicle had 4K dollars damage to the front end and had to be towed, the elk still had enough stuffing left to disappear into the trees.
