Euro speedometer

This is incredibly unimportant, but thought I'd post it because of my ongoing curiosity. The Euro speedometers in km/h have a cross-hatching in yellow between 50 and 60 km/h. What is it for?

I've seen this on all models from the 1970's & 1980's, regardless if petrol or diesel. I don't know if they are on Canadian vehicles though. This is one of those things that intrigued me since I was a kid, as I always checked out Mercedes cars. I now know what the I, II, III marks mean thanks to this forum (and many other previously unknown mysterious Benz features like the idle speed control, standing lights and that little spring that holds the fuel cap), so maybe someone here knows about this, too.
