Check the suction line from the tank to the IP and the priming pump. Leaks here won't show up very well -- the fuel will siphon back into the tank.
Best to run the glow plugs twice before attempting to start after sitting, and I would recommend that the car be run at least once a month rather than sitting -- if the battery goes down, it will start hard.
Lots of smoke would also indicate a bad glow plug or two. And make sure Pop ran the glowplugs long enough.....!
