Now, for those of you claiming the cops' actions were the proper and safest way to achieve their goals - here's a question for extra credit.

Blocking public right of way or other certain areas is against the law. If the area where they were fell into one of these then the police are charged by society to tell them they cannot do this. If asked to move and they do not, the public is hurt; this is according to our laws. Don't like it? Change the law. It's your society.
Extra credit: If law breakers see they can disregard the enforcement component of the law then they will continue to break the law- it's not rocket science. If they see they will not be allowed and the law will be enforced quickly and with out prejudice there will be less people willing to break the law and instead work on the issues in a legal manner. It's better for society to stop and prohibit law breakers as efficiently as possible. Do you propose we not enforce the law in cases which
you feel enforcement is not needed? It's not only the safety of everyone in society here, it's the rights of everyone also- including the rights of those which are affected by mobs which refuse to disperse.
