I can see why the Brit's held onto the Enfield for so long, a semi like a Garand or M1a couldn't really do much better.

While the Brits would like you to belive that they held onto the Enfield because of it's superiority this is in fact not so as they were in the process of developing a "Mauser style" rifle because of their experiences in the Anglo Boer war when WWI intervened and put rifle development on hold. Thereafter nobody was interested in spending money on weapons and the Enfield soldiered on acceptably during WWII. It's a good rifle but no better really than any of the other major combattants arms of the period.
