I had occasion to be in Matt's Saloon on Whiskey Row in Prescott AZ back in the early 80's. There was some halfassed house band playing. Springsteen and some other guy came in on motorcycles, sat at the bar and had a drink. Nobody noticed them; I wasn't much of a fan and surely didn't. Then he approached the band and offered to jam with them and all of a sudden everybody realized who he was. A less than full house got about an hour's free concert.
I'd had a similar thing happen previously at a steakhouse in Phoenix, only it was Jackson Browne who hit the bar and decided to jam.
