Oversimplification. A viable pregnancy at, say, 8 weeks is a fetus, not a baby. It will not become a baby without the voluntary cooperation of the mother. If the woman chooses not to cooperate in the process, she can jump off a house, pummel herself in the stomach, douche with harsh chemicals, you name it. Such things have, in fact, happened many times throughout history.
I think it's tragic that a woman would feel that way but then I've never been in those shoes. After enough young women from influential families die from botched, amateur abortions, people with power decide to make safe abortions available. Then other people get upset about that, start talking about murder and the pendulum swings the other way.
