And I'm not sure where you come up with the fact that they are charging now for the EPC. It is free (although you must enter a credit/debit card number, for authentication purposes not payment) for the US EPC, and $12 for the Euro version of the EPC.
See attached screen shot, which I just made from the EPC web site. I actually will be renewing mine in about 2 weeks...
You are correct that the EPC cannot be run natively on Macs. However I get around this using a VMWare virtual machine running Windows XP and Windows 7 on my Mac Pro, and this works fine. Or just use my work PC.
