Have personally eaten many a meal in Guangdong province (Shunde, to be precise). Have seen all manner of livestock being transformed from alive and aware to ready-to-eat in a matter of seconds (freshness of meat is INTENSELY important in the cuisine culture of Guangdong province). Wandering through the local open-air markets is quite the experience, to say the least. You haven't heard a cat scream until you've heard one going into the boiling pot just prior to skinning.
Cat, dog, bugs, durian (now that right there is one of the WORST smells in the world), shell fish with foot long boy-bits..... they're food. Just the same as Bessie, Porky, and Mister Ed (at least if your Canuckistanian) are food.
I love my animals (Darling Wife came with a dog and seven cats - now up to two dogs and eleven cats - hating animals not an option
) but they're pets. The dogs, cats, pigs, goats, pigeons, starlings, snakes, lizards, toads, fish, shell fish, etc, etc, etc that are consumed in other cultures are.... food.
