Back when the 560SL and 560SEL were new, the price of fuel was NOT a concern to these owners. They were gas guzzlers. You practically had to own a fuel refinery to run one.
In fact, many owners DID.
As to your question:
Today, the same scheme of dual pricing for cash and credit purchase of gasoline obtains exactly the same in California as you have described it in NY.
As one multiple Mercedes Benz owner to another, when buying gas, I strongly urge you to just put it on plastic and forget about it.

the V8 560 engines all drink the best and most costly Persian Perrier anyway: 91 octane "Premium".
