Lucas' joking aside, that the movie was filmed in the 40s' . . . the movie audiences of today are expecting CGI and all the bells and whistles that Skywalker Ranch can do so well. In addition, the story and the underlying themes of patriotism in the face of racial segregation and civil injustices, is what can take an average effects movie to something more.
