Last time I talked to NC DMV, they issue some type of temporary plate to a car that has not been registered lately, so that you can legally drive it to a shop for inspection.
I don't know how long it is good for, but might cover the Suburban in a pinch?
Also, not sure if it start some deadline for getting it to pass inspection...?
