In New Zealand 30 years ago you could buy your own home NG compressor that was connected to your home natural gas supply at the back of your stove.
The unit was about as big as a tea chest & you just connected your car to the hose when ever you were home.
I had friends over there with a Rover Quintet (re-badged Honda).
They got about 200 miles on a fill.
The tanks looked like oxygen bottles & took most of the trunk space.
Their fuel costs were about 1/10 that of RUG.
No expensive infrastructure needed.

LPG (propane) is now very common here in Australia. It is just under 1/2 the price of RUG. The latest systems being fitted inject the propane through the same injectors that are used when running on RUG.
Both ford & GM sell cars new that are dual fuel. LPG only systems are not so popular.
