I think he is putting a pretty smart strategy in place. The GOP has become the party of doom and gloom. The GOP response was more of the same "the sky is falling" crap. What is becoming their really, really big problem, is they don't seem to be able to articulate what exactly they are going to DO about any of our problems. They have not offered any plan or solution to anything. It's just a constant repetition of "If we get rid of Obama, all our problems will be solved!". Worked for awhile, but it has become nauseating thanks to the GOP Primary Clown Show, where Mittens keeps smirking "If we get rid of Newt, all our problems will be solved!" as Newt screams "if we get rid of that Socialist Romney, all our problems will be solved!", and yet neither one of them seems to be able to tell us anything about how we are really going to solve our problems, because they just represent more of the same hyper-partisan shyte. After gaining power in the House, where legislation is, according to the COTUS, supposed to originate, they didn't originate anything, and blocked everything. In my lifetime, I've never seen the angriest guy elected president, or the ones least willing to do anything elected to Congress. Just being pissed off about everything isn't a platform, it's a disgrace. Obama on the other hand, offers a compelling and optimistic view of the future, if we want that future. I think, with old sourpuss Orange Boner behind him, he pretty well mapped out his road to re-election.
