Yes there is "variable" valve timing on the 104 (pretty sure on a cis engine too, you seem to be confirming that, which is good, memory getting foggy). BUT it is either advanced or non advanced, so "variable" here means one of 2 positions.
And still questioning a sensor for the cam. The only purpose I can think of for it is for the ecm to monitior whether it is advanced or not??? Which doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense to me. Normally the cam position sensor is used for fuel injection purposes on a SFI engine, but this engine is not SFI it is CIS.
