I don't have a fancy camera so I won't be doing any special photography. I'm just wondering if there are any ideas for what to do and see in and around Reykjavik. The northern lights excursions go out at night and return well past midnight.

Sounds like a wonderful trip!
So far as what to do in Reykjavik - I'd try the local talent. The women there, are, (I've read), are often as not real stunners, drop dead bautiful in mny cases, and the ones that are single are by our U.S. standards are really uninhibited sexually and with a bit of luck you could REALLY have a lot of fun!!
I'd also take tours of the little volcanoes and hot springs attractions.
The country is unbelievably gorgeoeus, and yet, it isn't high on the list of tourist attractions for Americans.
You can rent a 4wd vehicle too, to go see some amazing places, but if you do, and forego a guide/driver, you had better know your and the car's driving limitations.
This is the country whose currency totally clapsed not to long ago so it would be intertesting to see how that affects things as regards YOUR traveling budget.
I think you have made a wise choice to select "Island" (as the natives call it) for a spectacular and memorable vacation. I predict you will love the place and the people you meet there.
