OTOH, I did enjoy smoking an obnoxious BMW convertible owner, ( that was probably a redundant description) one day many years ago.
That's the problem - I have both mine tuned well enough, and give them enough of a regular workout, that it's rare to have very much black smoke, if any, out the back end even on WOT takeoff.

OTOH, back in '06 when I acquired the first 87 300D, the PO had only put 130K miles on it in 18 years, and apparently it was mostly in-town driving - I doubt the car had even seen an Italian tuneup it's entire life.

About a week later, I drove it into work for the first time. Halfway there, a gent in a brand new powder blue 06 Mustang started making love to my rear bumper, to the point he even blew thru 2 stop signs to stay glued to my rear. After he rolled thru the second stop, I decided I'd had enough of this crap. Just after I felt the beast shift into second, I buried the skinny pedal and for the first time, activated the kickdown switch...

18 years worth of soot came blasting out of those twin tailpipes, to the point that my entire rear windshield was filled by the cloud and I completely lost sight of his car for a few seconds - it was a display that would have done a Cummins heavily modded for drag racing proud.

When I regained sight of his car, I realized two things - one, he'd come to a complete stop - and two, he'd had ALL his windows down.

For the last 6 miles into work, that guy stayed at least a good 1/8 mile away from me. Turns out he was one of the supervisors in the area of the plant I was inspecting in, and during one break heard him *****ing to his friends about how some a$$hat in a diesel MB had blown black soot all over his Mustang as I was walking by. Of course he didn't bother to inform them of HIS part in this little drama.
