Capitalism in this context is a red herring. It has nothing to do with education. The idea of meritocracy, that is you achieve whatever you will by dint of your own efforts and some will win and others will lose is inherently competitive. It implies winners and losers which is the natural human condition and something liberals in general, or the western liberal education system in particular - finds anathema.
