WTF??

why on earth would you want that? You realize that it will cripple our already weak economy, right? Fuel costs affect everything.
On just a populist perspective, how will that affect the low and low meduim wage earners who have to travel some distance to work? This is who it's really going to directly affect. In some areas this is no and never will be, any public transportation. How do thoses folks get around if they cant afford fuel? And, they are the people most likely to NOT be able to afford a new fuel efficient car.
Then lets look at higher fuel costs will affect food prices. They will naturally go up. This also will affect the same folks and the urban poor more than anyone. again, WTF is this country thinking?
So, is it just "f#$k the doomed", or would you prefer those folks be forcibly relocated to an urban collective (read ghetto) somewhere for reducation? It would be a perfect time to take their guns away too.
The issue of fuel costs is related to freedom: freedom of everyone to travel and freely associate, not just the rich, priviledged or those who choose to live in highly urban areas.
I sit on neither side of the aisle. This is a horrible situation that is going to hurt the people who can afford it least, and if you don't care about it, you are inhuman.
