Many states won't give any temporary plate to a resident of the state. NY certainly won't. You'd have to properly register it.
It's always a problem to move a vehicle for the first time. Purchasing from a dealer eliminates it because they issue the temporary tag. Otherwise, you're at the mercy of the local DMV, and, you absolutely need the vehicle insured in your home state or you get nothing from the local DMV.
