This is a good news, bad news situation. The good news is that this is the sort of foolishness that probably hurt the GOP in November. The bad news is that House Republicans have shown that they are willing to set aside what's good for the country in their pursuit of a Democratic president. They did it before and there would be nothing anyone could do if they chose to do it again, because as Gerald Ford said: “an impeachable offense is whatever a majority of the House of Representatives considers it to be at a given moment in history.”

That sounds cynical, but it is exactly right under the Constitution, although the Senate gets the final say after the House is done with its impeachment.

Sigh.
