Depends on the circumstances. One of my last military flights was in a chopper around what was called OP6. We sat on our helmets, surrounded by flak jackets and listened to the occasional thump! thump! as little projectiles hit the craft.
And all I had was an M9 
Fortunately, no more of that. I retire soon.
