Same here...butchered 100 chickens each year. We'd raise 300 and split the butchering between dad, my older brother, and myself.
With dad being a veteran of the Vietnam conflict, we grew up an arsenal of firearms...M1 Garands, 1911s, shotguns, 9mms, etc. I carried a H&R 9 shot .22 revolver on my hip at age 9 while berry hunting...used it to shoot snakes and the occasional attacking groundhog.
Dad made sure we knew how to strip a firearm down to parts, clean them properly and re-assemble.
