You can do it without pulling the intake but it isn't easy. If you have large hands and no lift, it may seem impossible. My best advise is to change that seal whenever you replace the water pump because replacing the pump usually causes it to leak and its a lot easier with the pump out. In fact if your pump has a lot of miles it may be prudent to do both at the same time.
