I am interested in this mod as well, as my alternator wireing connection is corroded beyond recognition.
I have rigged a temp fix, but am in need of the harness that goes from the fender to the alternator. A good replacement would be to do what you are considering, the main issue would be the brackets and pulleys though. I guess anything can be fabricated with time and patience.
