I had similar symptoms with an '82 300D and the problem
was the fuel pump. The car would seem to gain 25 horsepower every time I filled the tank. And the affect was immediate. Installing a fuel pump repair kit solved the problem. Immediately.
Consider that the fuel level with a full tank is well above the level of the fuel pump.
