In December 1777, Morroccan Sultan-Muhammad 3 included America in a list of country's to which Morrocco became the first country whose head of state publicly recognised the new United States.
Relations were formalised with the Morroccan-American Treaty of Freindship negotiated by Thomas Barclay, and signed by Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Muhammed 3 in 1786.

The treaty has withstood Trans-Atlantic strains for more than 220 years, making it the keystone of the longest unbroken treaty relationship in United States history.
