Yet he was the longest held POW in the Vietnam War. No, wait. Make that in the history of the United States. 10 days short of 9 years. On March 26, 1964 he was shot down in a Cessna L-19 observation plane near Khe Sahn. He was released March 16, 1973. For the first 4 years of captivity he saw no other American.
