Unconstitutional police searches and gun laws are entirely separate issues. Speaking of laws, I wouldn't mind seeing shall-issue gun licenses (they're not currently shall-issue in NYC, solely at police discretion). But I don't think that carry permits should be given out without due cause in a crowded city.
I'm fine with people keeping a weapon for home defense, business defense, or to go hunting outside of the city. But keep them where they belong, not carried on the street. Concealed carry should be limited to people who handle large amounts of cash, or have a specific threat to their lives.
What's appropriate in rural Texas, Vermont, or Arizona isn't necessarily appropriate in NY City.

For once i agree with spd.
The closeness of the population and general aggro of the metro experience makes me glad that access and carry laws are in effect. I work in many areas where safety is sometimes at a premium and have seen normal aggro go orbital in less than 30 seconds. If a gun was available, there would be a serious problem.
I haven't run into anything a 5 cell Maglite upside the head cannot handle.
The issue in most places isn't gun control it is gun owner training. 99% of the folks who pack and swagger don't spend enough time at the range to be able to hit what they aim at. I have been behind a car, ducking for cover, thanks to some 20 year old ******* who thinks he is Chow Yung Fat or Steven Sagal and busts thru a 17 round clip at his target 20 feet away and hits everything but the lottery and misses his target.
I have also seen NYPD put an armed perp down at 40 feet with a double tap. But then NYPD is required to spend time at the range each month and twice yearly on the "Dark Alley" range (similar to FBI "Shooters Alley").
NYC concieled carry requires the owner go thru NYPD Range training and monthly range time.
What is required elsewhere?
