Sounds like the neutral safety switch. This happened a while ago in my 300SD. It was a pretty easy replacement. No fluid loss. Must have been 5-6 years ago. Eventually it got to the point where it wouldn't start in P or N, so I just carried a 14 gauge wire and jumpered the starter until I got the replacement in..
