The story told by the locals is that the owner ran the place into the ground and then one day walked into the Bank and closed all the accounts. After they took off with all the cash they just left the place to fall in. They didn't even bother to tell the employees they were closing the place. I don't know if that is all true or not, but I do know this is......

The taxpayers with the bill for the clean-up. I don't know what it cost to tear down a refinery, but we got to pay for it since the owner could not be found.

Much of the steel in the plant was radioactive, so we got to pay for disposing of that, and the toxic chemicals left behind caused the area to evacuated for a few miles in every direction while they were cleaned up. We got to pay for that, too.

Yup.... The free market at work!

Today the land is fenced off with big DO NOT ENTER signs. If you want to see it on Google Earth then just look for the big empty place on both sides of the state highway on the west side of town.
They just closed a refinery in Marcus Hook, PA. Instead of tearing it down and disposing of it, they're just leaving it there until someone else foots the bill. That area already has something like twice the cancer rates of the rest of the surrounding areas
