They are very popular in the scca autocross, and very competitive.
About the fuel economy. I bought the better half a new 2011 legacy 4 door sedan with all the bells and whistles. It now has 68K miles on it with no repairs, only maintenance. She averages 32mpg, never less than 30, quite often 35-36 on a road trip. Dealer indicates that this is common amongst his customers. One just has to get used to the variable tranny with no defined shift points, a bit like driving my belt driven UTV.
