Francis, the thermostat you got is probably for a 617 engine. The original t'stat for a 603 has one temp setting (88C I think / not sure), and has an indentation for alignment on to the notched housing.

And as Chris Haney mentioned, it has a rubber seal attached to its periphery, and does not use an o-ring seal.
