Possibly an addict, and per CLKMan/her dad, an untreated bi-polar. Even with just the second half of that unholy combo, you've got a person who is making choices (not taking meds) that make her incapable of making rational choices... like choosing to not take her meds.

Darling Wife was previously married to a very nice man with very severe bi-polar disorder. She hit a point where she realized she would always love him but could never live with him.... he ain't a bad person, but he is broken.

I suspect the same is true of your daughter, C'man. Best of luck, follow your gut, and don't doubt yourself or your own darling wife - the broke inside her isn't something you did.
