97 SL 320 with a 5 speed auto, others should be the same. The shifter is hard to move from the right ( D ) to the left ( 4 ) . Going the other way is fine as is from P to D then 4 to 1.

Is this a normal function to prevent hitting 4 when wanting D? If it is, the detent is way stiffer than I'd like.
