I understand that. I have an IPad2 on which I run a comprehensive Aviation in flight software application. It is easy and evidently virus free or at least virus resistant for email, surfing and the like.

If those are the only things you want to do, the IPad will serve you well. It's just that buying the most recent version, might work out better in the long run.

If you buy one, there are some keyboards available that beat the heck out of the on screen touchpad. My wife bought my IPad for me as a Christmas present. She also bought a keyboard with a leather case that the IPad slips into. They communicate via bluetooth and I can touch type on the keyboard quite nicely. In flight the leather case allows me to swing the IPad around so that the leather holds it on my lap. A very nice accessory for an IPad.
