Arafat was in the way. If I remember he was a major obstacle to the peace process. With him out of the way Russia could broker a deal and gain global stature in the peace process instead of the US.

My guess would be that if he were murdered it would either have been to make way for an Anti-Hamas candidate such as Arafats successor who refused to recognise Hamas's subsequent election victory and relinquish power; or someone who didnt want a Peace Agreement to be concluded (the Americans?). Perhaps thats why a certain Israelli Prime Minister was also assassinated.
